Why MOC Unites Physicians in Fury

Slideshow

Saying the words maintenance of certification will get a lot of long, angry stares in the physician community. Here are a few reasons why.

You can put 50 physicians in a room and there is not a lot they'd universally agree upon - the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the role of advanced practice practitioners, or even the weather. Everyone has an opinion. But there is one thing that seems to get almost everyone up in arms: maintenance of certification (MOC). The program from the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), which is often required by insurance panels, hospital staffs, and licensing boards, does not have many defenders in the physician community - save for a few. Across the country, physicians are leading the charge to try and get state legislators to overthrow rules requiring MOC.What is it about MOC that gets physicians so fired up? We asked some of its more ardent critics and even had one doctor defend it. Here's what they had to say.Click here to download a PDF of this slideshow.
